In 1979 Led Zeppelin found themselves in an odd spot in the music world. Rock n Roll was no longer the trendy cool thing to do. It was almost, dare I say it… Old. In it’s place was disco, punk and new wave. So instead of showing their age the guys in Led Zeppelin decided to unabashedly embraced the latest pop music trends. Adding synthesizers to the mix and allowing John Bonham to continue with his groovy Bonham shuffle. While they never strayed to far from the Zeppelin sound what they did do, was just enough to bring their ‘79 album In Through The Out Door up to the top of pop charts, and the latin tinged percussion and piano of Fool In The Rain climbed up into the top 20.   Enjoy Bonham’s drums only version in the video below, but be careful of the potty mouth right at the beginning… That’s the only cussing, promise.

Today’s song is the Marvin Gaye classic, Let’s Get It On.  Listen to the podcast to find out what that song was originally SUPPOSED to be about.  The video, as promised, is a cover…  By Jack Black from the movie High Fidelty…

Cool story behind this song.  It started with a band called the Chateaus which included Gary De Carlo, Paul Leka, Dale Frasheur. They released a couple of unsuccessful album before finally De Carlo branched out on his own to record some solo stuff. Mercury records was so impressed with his songwriting that they wanted to release A sides. Which mean De Carlo had to come up with 4 B sides. That’s when they decided to re-record a Chateaus tune called kiss him goodbye. De Carlo decided to add the na na na na part to the hook. Which drove the Mercury record execs wild enthusiasm. They decided to release that song as an A side. Which apparantly disgusted all three guys enough to decide they wanted nothing to do with the record. Well, they still kept the songwriting credits. Eventually the trio conceded and the song was under the band name “Steam.” It would become a number one hit and ofcourse has taken on a life of it’s own at sporting events.

Listen to the story of how this song’s producer managed to “trick” radio djs into playing it in 1965.  Also enjoy the video in what has stood the test of time as the BEST cover version of this song.  It may quite possibly be Tom Cruise’s finest moment as an actor as well.
